Obama’s “Change You Can Believe In” is Just Recycled Rhetoric

September 4, 2008

Barack Obama has managed to secure the Domcratic nomination for President.  It hasn’t been easy.  He has had his problems.  The first problem came in the form of Rev. Jeremiah Wright and the United Trinity Church.  Rev. Wright preached Black Liberation Theology.  Most people were upset by the term black liberation theology, thinking it was a black seperation theology.  While it is a black supremecy version of christianity, it is much more than that.  Black Liberation Theology does teach that blacks are superior to other races, but it stems from Liberation Theology.  Liberation Theology was started in 1955 in Brazil.  It was the socialists’ way to bring the religious people of the region into their way of thinking.  In his 1972 book, A Theology of Liberation, Fr Gustavo Gutierrez theorized a combination of Marxism and the social-Catholic teachings contributing to a socialist current in the Church.

Rev. Wright’s racist and anti-American rants would be bad enough on their own, but Obama’s socialist connections didn’t end there.  His next major problem came from an association with William Ayers.  Obama was linked to William Ayers through two organizations, the Chicago Annenberg Challenge and the Joyce Foundation.  Obama served on the boards of both groups with William Ayers.  William Ayers is an unrepentant former terrorist from a group that called itself the Weather Underground from the 1960’s until 1980.  The Weather Underground was a militant socialist group that declared war on the United Staes.  In a comminique from the Weather Underground on 9 June 1970 came this message,

“Political power grows out of a gun, a molotov, a riot, a commune- and from the soul of the people.”  That gives a pretty good insight into the mindset of Ayers at that time.

For a short time in the 1970’s, the Weather Underground ran a small propaganda filled paper called the Osawatomie.  The summer 1975 No.2 issue ran this article, “The program of the Weather Underground is:

–US imperialism out of the third world

–Peace. Oppose imperialist war and US intervention

–Fight racism.  Build an anti-racist base within the working class.  Support self-determination for oppressed peoples

–Struggle against sexism and for the freedom of women.

–Organize the working class.  Fight for socialism.  Power to the people.

In a single sentence, the program means this: mobilize the exploited and oppressed people to wage the class struggle against US imperialism, the common enemy.”

The socialist rhetoric didn’t stop there.  The Osawatomie continued it’s rant against the United States with this,

Daycare Under Socialism

Look at socialist Cuba or China, where daycare is provided at no cost so that every mother can work who is able to.  Daycare centers in both countries are places where children are loved, cared for, and respected.  Children learn from the earliest years to have respect for each other, human life, for productive work.  In Cuba, children plant their own gardens, tend them and watch them grow.  In China, the children work in their daycare centers for a half hour a day doing socially productive chores like packing pencils or folding boxes.  The pencils are used in nearby factories, and the children feels the dignity which comes with making a contribution to their commune.  These children are the new women and men of whom Che spoke, and they remind us of what is possible when power is in the hands of the people.  Por los ninos.”

Has Ayers changed his ways?  No.  The Weather Underground was a militant splinter group of “Students for a Democratic Society”. In 1995 the CAC funneled $175,000 to the “Small Schools Workshop”.  The Workshop had been established in the early 90’s by William Ayers who hired Mike Klonsky, a former activist with Ayers in the SDS.  Klonsky had achieved notoriety in 1977 when he traveled to Beijing seeking the endorsement of Communist China for a political party he had helped to establish in the United States, the Communist Party(Marxist-Leninist).

In his 2001 screed, Fugitive Days, William Ayers recounts his life as a sixties radical, his tenure as a Weatherman Lieutenant, his terrorist campaign against America and his enduring hatred for the United Staes.  “What a country, it makes me want to puke,” Ayers said.

How did Obama come to be aquainted with Ayers?  Obama says he never really knew Ayers all that well.  He just went to meet him as a routine part of Chicago politics.  Of their time on the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, Obama says Ayers was just some guy in his neighborhood.  He claims they never exchanged alot of ideas.  As of yet, I haven’t heard any comment from Obama about the Joyce Foundation.  Obama did say that his and Ayers children went to school together, however Ayers children were grown adults before Obama’s children were even born.  But how did Obama know about Ayers before meeting him?  Obama went to Columbia University.  The Students for a Democratic Society were deeply influenced by the writings of C. Wright Mills, a philosopher who was a Professor at Columbia University until his death in 1962.  The SDS has reemerged recently with a new organization.  They have the same socialist ideas as their predecessors, but seem to lack the organization and militancy as of yet, their website can be seen at

Is Obama’s attraction to the Socialsit Left unique?  No. The left appears to be equally attracted to Obama.  In fact, Obama has earned the endorsement of the Communist Party USA. had this to say,

“It’s sad that some who seek progressive change are missing the forest for the trees.  But they will not dampen the wide and deep enthusiam blocking a third Bush term represented by John McCain, or for bringing Obama by a landslide into the White Housen with a large Democratic Congressional Majority.

A broad multiclass, multi-racial movement is converging around Obama’s “hope, change and unity” campaign because they see in it the thrilling opportunity to end 30 years of ultra-right rule and move our nation forward with a broadly progressive agenda.

The struggle to defeat the ultra-right and turn our country on a positive path will not end with Obama’s electiion.  But that step will shift the ground for succesful struggles going forward.

One thing is clear.  None of the people’s struggles-from peace to universal health care to an economy that puts main street before wall street-will advance if McCain wins in November.

Let’s keep our eyes on the prize.”

Obama is not the first Democratic candidate that has been endorsed by the Communist Party.  John Kerry earned this dubious distinction in 2004.  Doug Fiedor went down a list of comparisons between John Kerry and the cpusa on the 7 August 2004.  The Obama positions are from

“cpusa–Bush is destroying workers’ rights and outsourcing jobs instead of protecting the right to organize and creating new jobs rebuilding schools, bridges, roads and hospitals.

Kerry–Create good-paying jobs here, not ship them overseas; support our unions; establish a national education trust fund to ensure that schools always get the funding they need; offer a fully refundable college opportunity tax credit on up to $4,000 of tuition for every year of college.

Obama–Obama would spend $210 billion in construction and enviromental industries.  $150 billion to create 5 million “green collar” jobs, $60 billion would go to a “national infrastructure reinvestment bank” to rebuild highways, bridges, airports and other public projects.  Obama believes that workers shouold have the freedom to choose whether to join a union without harrassment or intimidation from their employers.  Obama cosponsored and is astrong advocate for the “Employee Free Choice Act,” a bipartisan effort to assure that workers can exercise their right to organize(EFCA does away with secret ballots, leaving dissenting employees open to “harrassment or intimidation” from other employees).  Obama will make college affordable for all Americans by creating a new “American Opportunity Tax Credit.”  This universval and fully refundable credit will ensure that the first $4,000 of a college education is completely free for most Americans, and will cover two-thirds the cost of tuition at the average public college or universty and make community college tuition completey free for most students.  Obama will also ensure that the tax credit is available to families at the time of enrollment by using prior years tax data to deliver the creedit when tuition is due.

cpusa–Bush is bankrupting the federal government with giant tax cuts for the very rich and super-funds to the military instead of securing the budget for human needs by taxing the rich and spending on human needs.

Kerry–Cut the deficit in half during the first four years in office, end corporate welfare as we know it; roll back the Bush tax cuts.

Obama– Obama will protect tax cuts for poor and middle class families, but he will reverse most of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest taxpayers.

cpusa–Bush is privatizing medicare, social security and public education with phony reforms instead of enacting health care for all, protecting retirement funds and full funding for public education through college.

Kerry-Use targeted tax cuts to extend affordable, high-quality coverage to 95 percent of Americans, including every child; make affordable health care a right–not a privilege–for every American.

Obama– Obama will make available to all Americans, including the self-employeed and small businesses, to buy affordable health coverage that is similar to the plan available to members of congress.

cpusa–Bush is rolling back civil rights gains instead of enforcing and expanding affirmitive action to end racism in all areas of life.

Kerry–Extremist judges are turning back the clock on our 40 year march toward equality; will strongly enforce our nation’s civil rights laws, support affirmitive action to reduce discrimination and expand opportunity, and only appoint judges with a record of enforcing the nation’s civil rights and anti-discrimination laws.

Obama–Obama will reverse the politicization that has occured in the Bush administration’s Department of Justice. He will put an end to the ideological litmus tests used to fill positions within the Civil Rights Division.  Combat employment discrimination.  Expand hate crimes statutes. End deceptive voting practices.  End racial profiling. Reduce crime recidivism by by providing ex-offender support. Expand the use of drug courts.

cpusa–Bush is curttailing women’s rights and choice by undermining Roe v. Wade instead of upholding the right to choice and ending the gender wage gap.

Kerry–Help balance work and family, close the pay gap; protect women’s health and rright to choose; only nominate individuals to the federal bench whose records demonstrate a respect for the full range of constitutional rights, including the right to privacy and the right to choose.

Obama–Obama has been a consistant champion of reproductive choice and will make preserving women’s rights under Roe v. Wade a priority as President.  He opposes any constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s decision in that case.  Despite decades of progress, women still only make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes.  Obama believes the Government needs to take steps to better enforce the Equal Pay Act, fight job discrimination, and imporve child care options and family medical leave to give women equal footing in the workplace.

cpusa–Bush is abusing immigrant workers in low-wage jobs instead of providing a clear path to citizenship and equal rights.

Kerry–Offer a reform bill in his first 100 days that allows immigrants to earn legaliztion and encourages family reunification.

Obama–Obama supports a system that allows undocumented immigrants who are in good standing to pay a fine, learn english, and go to the back of the line for the opportunity to become citizens.  He believes we must fix the dysfunctional immigration bureaucracy and increase the number of legal immigrants to keep families together and meet the demand for jobs that employers cannot fill.

cpusa–Bush is exploiting and ruining the enviroment by protecting corporate polluters instead of conserving our national resources for the public good.

Kerry–The League of Conservation Voters called Kerry an “enviromental champion”-will improve the enviroment in backyards and communities across America; revitalize contaminated industrial sites; get toxics[sic] out of communities; guarantee our children access to clean, safe parks and baseballfields; take on traffic congestion and sprawl; reverse the Bush-Cheney rollbacks to our Clean Air Act; plug loopholes in the law; take aggressive action to stop acid rain; use innovative, job-creating programs to reduce mercury emissions and other emissions that contribute to global warming.

Obama–The League of Conservation Voters has given Barack Obama the highest lifetime rating of anyone currently running for President.  As President, Barack Obama will make combating global warming a top priority.  He will reinvigorate the Enviromental Protection Agency(EPA), respecting its professionalism and scientific integrity.  And he will protect our children from toxins like lead, be a responsible steward of our national treasures and reverse the Bush administration’s attempts to chip away at our nation’s clean air and water standards.

cpusa–Bush’s war in Iraq is a disaster for our security and economy.  He is pushing for more preemptive wars and for first strike nuclear militarey policy instead of negotiations and cooperation utilizing the UN.

Kerry–Today, our leadership has walked away from more than a century of American leadership in the world.  They bully instead of persuade.  They act alone when they could assemble a team.  They confuse leadership with going it alone.

Obama–Obama will give his Secretary of Defense and militarey commanders a new mission in Iraq: ending the war.  Obama will launch an agressive diplomatic effort to reach a comprehensive compact on the stability of Iraq and the region.  The effort will include all of Irawq’s neighbors–including Iran and Syria.

cpusa–Bush is denying civil liberties and free speech in the name of fighting terrorism instead of repealing the USA Patriot Act and helping cities, towns and states fund firefighters and police.

Kerry–Our first defenders will respond to any attack with courage and heroism-but they also need the equipment and manpower to do the job; believe in an America that is safe and free, and [promise to] protect personal liberties as well as personal security.

Obama–Obama has consistently said he would support a Patriot Act that would strengthen civil liberties without sacfricing the tools that law enforcement needs to keep us safe.”

While Obama is the the Democratic nominee for the Presidency, this link to the Communist Party USA is not strictly related to Obama.  It is the entire Democratic Party with links to communist and socialist parties and agendas.  Rep. Nancy Pelosi served on the executive committe of the Socialist-leaning Democratic Progressive Caucus.  Until 1999, the website of the Progressive Caucus was hosted by the Democratic Socialists of America.  Another officer of the Democratic Progressive Caucus, and one of its guiding lights, is avowed socialist Rep. Bernie Sanders, the Vermont Independent.  The current website for the Democratic Progressive Caucus is

Included in their website is the Progressive Promise.

“The Congressional Progressive Caucus offers the Progressive Promise to all.  We believe in government of the people, by the people, and for the people.  Our Fairness Plan is rooted in our core principles.  It also embodies national priorities that are consistent with the values, needs, and hopes of all our people, not just the powerful and the privileged.  We pledge our unwavering commitment to these legislative prorities and we will not rest until they become law.

The Democratic Socialists of America claims to be “the largest socialist orgaqnization in the United States, and principle US affiliate of the Socialist International.”   Their website, describes why they believe socialism is good for America.

“Democratic Socialists believe that both the economy and society should be run democratically–to meet public needs, not to make profits for a few.  To achieve a more just society, many structures of our government and economy must be radically transformed through greater economic and social democracy so that ordinary Americans can participate in the many decisions that affect our daily lives.

Democracy and socialism go hand in hand.  All over the world, wherever the idea of democracy has taken root, the vision of socialismhas taken root as well–everywhere but the United States.”

To be sure, countless millions of Cubans, Chinese, and other people from from other countries that have been forced to endure socialism would be more than willing to tell the DSA what socialism is really about, if it didn’t mean the end to their freedom, and possibly, to their very lives.

The DSA’s chief organizing stated goal is to work within the Democratic Party and remove the stigma attached to “Socialism” in the eyes of most Americans.

“Stress our Democratic Party strategy and electoral work.  The Democratic Party is something the public understands, and association with it takes the edge off.  Stressing our Democratic Party work establishes some distance from the radical subculture and helps ingratiate you to the milieu of the young liberals.”

The website goes on to define what the Socialists are and what they seek for our nation.

Democratic Socialists do not want to create an all-powerful government bureaucracy.  But we do not want big corporate bureaucracies to control our society either.  Rather, we believe that social and economic decisions should be made by those whom they most effect.

Today, corporate executives who answer only to themselves and a few wealthy stockholders make basic decisions affecting millions of people.  Resources are used to make money for capitalists rather than to meet human needs.  We believe that the workers and consumers who are effected by economic institutions should own and control them.

Social ownership could take many forms, such as worker-owned cooperatives or publicly owned enterprises managed by workers and consumer representatives.  Democratic Socialists favor as much decentralization as possible.  While the large concentrations of capital in industries such as energy and steel may necessitate some form of state ownership, many consumer-goods industries might be best run as cooperatives.

While we believe that democratic planning can shape major social investments like mass transit, housing, and energy, market mechanisms are needed to determine the demand for many consumer goods.”

The site goes on to tell how the “government” they don’t really want can enforce socialism against companies.

“The government could use tax incentives to encourage companies to act in the public interest and outlaw destructive activities such as exporting jobs to low-wage countries ands polluting our envoiroment.”

They go on to explain why people work, at least those that do work, and what would encourage those that don’t work to start.

“People enjoy their work if it ismeaningful and enhances their lives.  They work out of a sense of responsibilty to their community and society.”

And so many people thought they were working just so they could have a home, fodd, clothes and a future.  But there is more yet.  The site goes on to explain what jobs in the future will be like under socialism.

“…a long term goal of socialism is to eliminate all but the most enjoyable kinds of labor…”

The major problem with this theory is that different people find different kinds of labor enjoyable.  Not everybody likes the same kinds of work, just like not everybody likes socialism.

From the Democratic Socialists of America, we learn who we should be learning from in the international world.

“We can learn from the comprehensive welfare state maintained by the Swedes, from Canada’s national health care system. France’s nationwide childcare program, and Nicaragua’s literacy programs.”

There is a list of programs to look up to.  All free, but none as effective as private enterprise has managed in the United States.  But it does lead to what the Socialists are up to.  Globalization.

“Multinational corporations must be brought under democratic controls, and workers’ organizing efforts must reach across borders.”

The DSA goes on to say still more.

“Now, more than ever, Socialism is an international movement.  As Socialists have always known, the welfare of working people in Finland or California depends largely on standards in Italy or Indonesia.  As a result, we must envision reforms that can withstand the power of multinationals and global banks, and we must imagine a world order that is not controlled by bankers and bosses.”

This wouldn’t be so frightening if it was just some fringe groups, but it is much more than that.  These groups have now moved into and aligned themselves with the Democratic Party.  The DSA tells why on its website.

“…we are not a seperate party.  Like our friends and allies in the feminist, labor, civil rights, religious, and community organizing movements, many of us have been active in the Democratic Party.  We work with those movements to strengthen the party’s left wing, represented by the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

The process and structure of American elections seriously hurts third party efforts.  Winner-take-all elections instead of proportional representation, rigorous party qualification requirements that vary from state to state, a presidential instead of a parliamentary system, and the two-party monopoly on political power have doomed third party efforts.  Maybe sometime in the future, in coalition with our allies, an alternative national party will be viable.  For now, we will continuee to support progressives who have a real chance at winning elections, which usually means left-wing Democrats.”

The icing on the cake came in the form of a letter to the editor.

“All the elements were present: the individual stories told by real people of their situations and hardships, the packed-to-the-rafters crowd, the crowd’s chanting of key phrases and names, the action on the spot of texting and phoning to show instant support and commitment to jump into the political battle, the rallying selections of music, the setting of the agenda by the power people.  The Democratic Convention had all the elements of the perfectly organized event, Saul Alinsky style.

Barack Obama’s training in Chicago by the great community organizers is showing its effectiveness.  It is an amazing format, and the method of my late father always works to get the message out and get supporters on board.  When executed meticulously and thoughtfully, it is a powerful strategy for initiating change and making it really happen.  Obama learrned his lesson well.

I am proud to see my father’s model for organizing is being applied successfully beyond local community organizing to affect the Democratic campaign in 2008.  It is a fine tribute to Saul Alinksy as we approach his 100th birthday.

L. David Alinsky”

As Obama seeks the White House, the Democrats are seeking a fillibuster-proof Congress.  If they succeed, Obama and his Socialist cronies will get the change they so desperately desire.  The bad part for America is that when they get it, there is no turning back.  The Communist Party USA warns us with this,

“A revolutionary majority, based on mass people’s organizations and political parties, must work to make it politically impossible for the former ruling class to return to power, or use the military to impose a return to power.  As with all governments, should forces try to take power by unconstitutional means, by coup, or counter-revolutionary insurrection, the full weight of the government would be used to uphold Socialist legality and working people’s power”

We have until November 4th, after that the writing is on the wall.  If Obama and the Democrats win, the Communists and Socialists win.  If they win, Americans lose, we lose our freedoms, our Constitution, our way of life.  If Obama and the Democrats win, American will become another Cuba, Venezuela, China, Soviet Union.
